Recently, my other half surprised me with a visit. And, as usual, he took it to the next level by surprising me with tickets to see Wicked, which is now in residence in San Francisco.
Previously I've only ever seen the show from the side, which essentially translates to "obstructed view". This time, we had row L, smack dab in the center. Now, row L may seem like a ways back, but in this particular house, it's not: the auditorium is tiny. It actually reminded me a lot of the Palace Theatre on Broadway. Shallow and wide.
I saw things I've never seen before in that show; which, actually, help me catch various nuances in the storyline that I had previously missed/forgotten. I spent a good two hours with constant goosebumps and tears in my eyes. It is an amazingly remarkable show with a subtle social commentary running through it. I LOVE this show!
It made me think of other Broadway shows I have either seen or interpreted (I'm focusing on musical theatre here, not straight shows). My top 3, in no particular order are Wicked, Cabaret, and Lion King (thanks, Mouse!!). Other tops are Cats, Jekyll & Hyde, JCS, even 42nd Street has a twisted but fond place in my heart (as does my friend Jean because of it--I really owe the show to her).
I don't really have a point today with this post, other that to say, I LOVE WICKED. Stunning. Moving. Tear-jerking. Funny. An amazing show. I can't wait to go broke going to SF to see it over and over and over again! If, for some reason, you've come across this posting, love musical theater, and haven't seen Wicked--my recommendation is: Go see it!
Oh. And defy gravity.
Ooh, I'm a little jealous. Isn't the show incredible from the center? I saw it from the center for the first time this year, too. I love the shadow of the witch at the beginning.
ReplyDeleteAh, memories. :)
