Plane with dead pilot lands safely in Newark, NJ

Have you seen the news today?

I have several different trains of thought running through my mind on this one.

To start with, Holy crap! The PILOT died? In mid-flight? That is just so freaky and wrong! For someone who has "the fear" as I've heard it referred to, this does nothing for me-- and don't try to tell me that more people die in auto accidents than plane crashes...it doesn't help... fears of this magnitude are never rational.

Can you imagine the in-flight announcement on that trip? "Ladies and Gentleman, this is your co-pilot speaking... Is there a doctor on the plane, because it seems I've suddenly and unexpectedly become your pilot and your assistance in the cockpit would be appreciated..."

A sweet friend of mine is a flight attendant, and we had a great conversation about it. Here's a brief excerpt:

Me: Were you on that flight with the dead pilot?
Him: Are you sure he was dead and not deadheading? How'd you hear about it?
Me: It's front page news!
Him: I am sure it wasn't the pilot of that plane. I am sure it was a pilot for another plane.
Me: No--it was THE pilot!...
Him: Ummm.. .it's possible then. Honestly, we transport dead bodies all the time. This one was just more important..... All I know is some other pilot just moved up one number in seniority now...

He then went on to enlighten me about a flight wherein the pilot died and they had to have an off duty pilot help land the plane.

I'm don't want to ever fly again, I swear.
