This not having tv thing is a whole different world. I actually used to like watching the news every night (depressing as that expereince generally was) because at least I felt connected in some minor way to what was going on in the world around me.
Since not having tv, I've been stumbling across various blogs--usually because someone mentions another blog in their own, and then they tell two friends, and they tell two freinds, and Gee! Your hair smells terrific!
It's interesting to get a glimpse into peoples' lives, and see that my own isn't often so far from the mark. Whatever that mark happens to be. I usually end up coming away with a feeling of normalcy; like I'm not the only one struggling. Which is great, since most people in my life seem to have their poop in a group, and mine is spread from here to kingdom come.
One upside to not having tv is that I've been able to search sales and expand my collecion of gay movies. And not the kind that are found in stores past the sign reading "Over 21 only." I've been keeping an eye on TLA for a while, and they were recently having a killer sale, and I got some great movies that I've been wanting to buy for a while. I'm taking the time to watch the Special Features sections with a whole new eye as well.
Last year, I started up a social group, a sort of cinematic stone soup gathering. The economy was tanking, people didn't have a bunch of money to blow on going out, so I started Fag Film Friday. Well, after talking to a few people it just go too big to have at my apartment; luckily a couple of friends of mine offered to allow their place to be used as the "cinema." So, Fag Film Friday became sort of Film Friday with Friends, since the attendees were no longer justs fags. Gays, lesbians, and straights... it's a fun mix, and we end up seeing some fun movies. It's a potluck sort of thing, so no one is responsible for spending too much money to put it all on, it's nicer (and cheaper!) than going out, and we get to see some great films.
Last night I previewed "Queens." It's a cute film, in Castillian (Spain spanish), with English subtitiles. Very cute movie about several mothers whose sons are getting married...to other men...in Spain's first gay marriage ceremony. I speak enough Spanish to know that some of the translations are exactly right, and you can tell anyway but the subtitles that whoever did the translations wasn't a native speaker of English, but the dialog is still easy to follow and the storyline humorous. A good, fun movie to watch. Will be good for the next movie night.
And now, sadly, I am off to pay bills, clean house, and be responsible, until I can return the the world of blogs and gay movies, and be a complete slouch.
