Here's a bit of lexical history for you. The term "faggott" is an term for a bunch of twigs. When witches were burnt at the stake, faggotts were thrown onto the pire to get the flames to burn hotter and higher. Eventually, gay men were also thrown onto the fires, and hence gay men were/are referred to as faggotts. I'm assuming that becuase they would therefore burn is how they got to be known as flaming faggotts.Fast-forward a few centuries to today.
The use of the term "faggott" in the news and media never ceases to irritate and infuriate me.
What makes it okay for the media to use this word?? No other epithet would be tolerated, but it's totally okay to use this one. Or, practically any other slur that is aimed at sexual minorities. Everyone just shines it on.
Can someone please explain to me why it is okay to use this term publically, as long as it is in reference to what someone said? If a media outlet were to print a story that said, "Slurs such as n----r were hurled at the black man," heads would fucking roll.
The hypocrisy totally galls me.
