Recently I was at work at a local university. I was on my way to class when nature called. Apparently, I wasn't the only one that was on the line... When I walked into the men's room to take care of what I needed to take care of, I was struck by the fact that there was one stall that was clearly occupied by a single individual, but there were two voices coming from the stall, one of which had a tinny quality to it.
I was horrified at the fact that while I was doing Number 1, the gentleman in the stall was doing Number 2, and he was doing so while he had the other person on speaker phone.
Eww.
Where does it stop, really?? Now I will freely admit that I couldn't function without my cell... I can barely remember the days before we had these loved/hated devices. Our use of them is frightening and embarassing... but this guy took it to a whole new level with his multi-tasking.
If I am on a phone call with someone and they put me on hold because they want to take another call and chat that person up, I hang up. Putting me on hold instantly tells me my call is not as important as the other incoming call. And maybe it isn't, if you're waiting for news of a loved one in Port-au-Prince or the results of your pet's surgery from the vet. But to be put on hold to talk to someone else socially?? Let the freakin' call go to voicemail, for gods' sake; that is one reason why we have voicemail, correct? If I could I would totally get rid of call waiting on my phone; unfortunately it is a standard feature (dammit).
And taking calls in public is just flat out rude the way some people handle them (as anyone whose ever ranted about taking a call in a movie theater can attest to... or on a bus... or anywhere else that's crowded...). Excuse yourself to a more private area please. I won't share my calls with you; I don't want to be in on yours.
But to be on speaker phone while going Number 2 in a public lav?! That's just beyond any level of tacky.
The landlord at work contacted me and asked me to ask the employees to stop talking on the phone in the bathroom because other tenants were upset...
ReplyDeleteScary, huh?
Yeah, and then when they have to wipe--I don't even want to think where to set the phone and which hand to pick it up with when you are done! Great writing and funny stuff...at least that tinny voice #2 was a cell phone and NOT another person in the stall...LOL
